I was wondering if one can use an infrared remote control unit
to control an underwater vehicle. i.e can infrared light travel underwater and if so how deep underwater. Also is infrared affected by sun light and will the infrared signal be reflected from the water surface, and if so will it reach the reciever at the underwater vehicle ?

Probably not very well, and would need to be close to the surface.
If it was deep, the water would cause the infra red signal to be distorted and would be unlikely to reach the receiver reliably.
no, water absorbs IR.
Infrared light travels only a few feet through water. So, no; it won’t work.
